Everyone is welcome to help create the Peoplehood parade and pageant together this Fall in Spiral Q’s community art builds! All experience levels are invited to join in the puppet and prop building, paper machéing, cutting, painting, screen printing, sewing, idea-generating, and community building that lies ahead. We will be working with activists and community groups to create art for their protest and advocacy campaigns in the streets (and in the Peoplehood Parade) as well as developing and creating the Peoplehood Pageant! We will schedule times with groups so we can plan org-specific projects, but individuals can drop in anytime – stay for a whole session, or pop in for a few hours! Peoplehood is powered by the people after all.

Signing your group (or self) up!
Spiral Q can work with social justice groups to design and create work to be featured in the Peoplehood Parade, and used to support groups’ amplification of their campaigns and demands in the streets, as well as the Pageant, which will feature an organization’s demands and vision through artistry. Organizational Art Build participants may be capped this year based on how ambitious proposed projects are. If your community or activist group wants to be in the Peoplehood parade and utilize the art builds to make art to amplify your campaign in protest, fill out this form. Individuals can sign up to help build or support Peoplehood in pre-Parade activities or for Parade Day with this form here! Forms will close Tuesday, October 10th.
Space & Safety Information:
Community Art Builds are a place of collaboration and creativity among many different minds. We acknowledge the diversity of tactics and politics in space, and want to make everyone feel welcome. Please wear closed toe shoes to Community Art Builds. We are often working on multiple projects with paint, so be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty/messy. We will not actively be providing consistent food in the space, but you are more than welcome to bring food for yourself and/or others. There are a few food options in the area, but ordering food/bringing your own may be easiest particularly if you have dietary restrictions. Please bring your own water bottle. We will be providing some one-use water bottles and/or cups, but we’re hoping to reduce our waste by providing a refill station for reusable bottles.
Accessibility Information:
Spiral Q’s studio/warehouse has large garage doors that provide ventilation, but the space is fairly dusty. We are working to address accessibility issues, but it is not currently ADA accessible. The main room is accessible through the garage door, to reach the bathroom there are two steps, one is about 6” tall and one is about 3” tall. If you have accessibility needs or questions please reach out to us, so we can coordinate with you and make your participation at Peoplehood feel safe and accessible.
Covid Safety Information:
Spiral Q is committed to harm reduction, and as such we want to protect the most at-risk amongst us. We are asking folks to continue wearing face masks while working indoors with each other. Most of our art-builds will be outside or on the first floor with large garage doors open for ventilation and air-flow. If you’re outdoors and with enough space to socially distance, feel free to take off your mask. Please be mindful and respectful of others’ needs for space and continued Covid safety. We will have masks and free Covid tests available on-site for all. Thank you for your commitment to keeping us safe!
Youth Participation:
Everyone is welcome at Spiral Q Art Builds, this includes children. While these sessions are not specifically geared toward children, we welcome families to come and take on an art making role during the build (like paper mache or painting). We also always have coloring pages and supplies for young folks who’d prefer some crayon fun.
Due to the nature of our studio space (power tools, sharp objects, rough ground, paint) please plan accordingly with closed-toed shoes and work clothes for any young participants accompanying you to Community Art Builds. Please keep young children under your supervision while at Spiral Q and abide by adult-only tools and areas where posted.
We ask all our participants, no matter what age, to follow Spiral Q policies set in place to ensure we all have a safe and welcoming experience while we work toward making our parade dreams into Peoplehood realities.
Stay in touch:
We will be sending weekly emails to keep Community Art Build participants informed and involved in the Peoplehood process including what projects we’ll be working on each week, and the progression of the theme and story of the Pageant. If you’d like to receive these updates, email community@spiralq.org with the subject – “Peoplehood People” list.
