Professor Appelbaum has worked in educational research and curriculum studies for over 20 years. He is the Director of Art Education Programs, the University Coordinator of Visual Literacy, and the director of the sTRANGLEY fAMILIAR mUSIC gROUP at Arcadia University. He was a founding member of the Arts-Based Educational Research Group at the American Educational Research Association, and continues as an active reviewer of proposals and evaluator of research for this group to this day. As an installation artist and musician, Professor Appelbaum regularly establishes interactive educational experiences that serve simultaneously as data collection for assessment and evaluation. He teaches courses in curriculum development and design, sound studies, and interdisciplinary seminars that integrate arts-based methods of teaching and learning. As the Coordinator of Visual Literacy, he is responsible for faculty development and the creation of new courses that use instructional strategies grounded in the role of the image and the analysis of the visual. As the President of the American Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies since 2010, Dr. Appelbaum’s own work in curriculum employs arts-based methods of research and evaluation to support arts concepts across the curriculum.
