ART FOR LIBERATION
Friday, July 17 at 7 PM
The Rotunda
4014 Walnut Street

Join us for a conversation about art in the everyday work of social movements with Elizam Escobar, a renowned painter and art theorist from Puerto Rico who spent twenty years in prison for his involvement in the Puerto Rican independence movement. During and after his incarceration, his art has been a vital component of Puerto Rican organizing on the island and in the U.S.

The evening includes performances by poet Joserramon Che Melendes (San Juan), members of MMP Arts and Culture Collective, and a special one night exhibition of ZAPATA VIVE!, a portfolio of prints from La Escuela de Cultura Popular Martires del 68 (the 68 Martyr's Peoples Culture Schools in Mexico City).

Co-sponsored by Books Through Bars, Centro Pedro Claver, MMP's Arts and Culture Collective, National Boricua Human Rights Network, and Spiral Q Puppet Theater.

TEENS REVOLT is an exhibition of original silkscreen prints created by Parkway Northwest High Schools students through Spiral Q's Education Intitiatives. Inspired by the used of posters in the south African anti-apartheid movement, students designed and printed posters that make bold statements about "what's on their minds."

In March, Spiral Q traveled to South Africa to meet with artists who were at the center of the anti-apartheid poster movement. CULTURE AND RESISTANCE: SOUTH AFRICA, THEN AND NOW displays images, interviews and ancedotes from Spiral Q's trip and tells the story of the courageous artists who dedicated their lives and work to the struggle for freedom.

This event is part of ART IN RESISTANCE, Spiral Q's study and celebration of art's historic and ongoing role as a liberating force in justice movements around the world.

This program has been supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
