More than just a public forum for the community arts of the Philadelphia region, our acclaimed Living Loft Museum provides affordable tours and workshops that celebrate local and personal voices through the universal elements and images of civic theater and pageantry. It is, moreover, a uniquely interactive exploration of the recovered history of a near-lost medium of popular political expression.

Our Living Loft Museum has worked with over one hundred different public and private schools, after-school programs, senior centers, and social services organizations to encourage our guests to identify, explore, and make visible issues important in their lives through the medium of giant puppetry.

A visit to the theater begins with a tour of our museum, which includes six-foot human heads of all shapes and sizes, a flock of birds of every hue, cardboard schools of fish, and an enormous paper-mache matador, and is followed by a choice of several art-related activities—which can range from making masks or puppets to our wildly popular scavenger hunt. A basic visit lasts almost an hour, with twenty minutes in the museum learning about Spiral Q Puppet Theater and the history of community pageantry, and thirty minutes in our studio.

We also offer a diverse selection of additional curricula that can enhance your museum experience, including longer workshops in giant puppetry, silk screening, making musical instruments, and performing street theatre; please browse through this website for a complete catalog.

Our museum tour can be adapted to suit multiple developmental levels and special needs, and has proven to be an innovative means of enriching classroom themes with creative self-expression in a new and stimulating context.
